T20 Stats Explained: Strike Rate, Average & Impact

Almost every cricket argument online is really an argument about a number that one side has misread. The Numbers — Quick Answer

Strike rate is runs per hundred balls — speed. Average is runs per dismissal — survival. Economy is runs conceded per over — control. Bowling strike rate is balls per wicket — penetration. In a twenty-over game none of them mean much alone, because there are only 120 deliveries and every one of them has a cost. Read them in pairs, always with the phase of the innings in mind.

Strike Rate: The Core T20 Number

Batting strike rate is runs divided by balls faced, multiplied by one hundred. Forty-five runs from thirty balls is a strike rate of 150 — a hundred and fifty runs per hundred deliveries. That is the whole formula.

Its value in T20 comes from scarcity. An innings contains 120 legal deliveries, so a ball consumed without a run is not neutral — it raises the burden on everyone who bats afterwards. Strike rate is the cleanest way of expressing whether a batter is easing or increasing that burden.

What it does not tell you is anything about risk. A strike rate of 160 across eight balls and a strike rate of 160 across sixty balls are wildly different achievements, and the number itself does not distinguish them. Always look at balls faced alongside it.

Batting Average and Why It Behaves Oddly

Batting average is runs divided by the number of times a batter has been dismissed. In Test cricket it is the headline number, because survival is genuinely the currency of the format. In T20 it is more slippery, for two reasons.

First, not-outs inflate it. A finisher who regularly bats at the end of an innings is often unbeaten, and each not-out adds runs to the numerator without adding to the denominator. Second, survival is not always the objective. A batter who protects their wicket while the required rate climbs may have helped their average and hurt their team.

Practical rule: never quote a T20 average without the strike rate beside it, and never quote either without the number of innings. Those three together are a description. Any one of them alone is an argument waiting to be lost.

Phase Matters More Than Totals

A twenty-over innings is really three innings stitched together, and each has its own economics.

This is why phase-adjusted or "impact" style measures exist. They attempt to compare a player's output against what was typical in that phase, in those conditions, rather than against a flat career figure. Bowling: Economy vs Strike Rate

Bowlers carry two rate statistics and they measure different jobs. Economy rate is runs conceded per over — a containment measure. Bowling strike rate is balls bowled per wicket taken — a penetration measure.

A spinner who concedes little but takes few wickets and a quick who is expensive but strikes regularly can be equally valuable, depending on what the captain needs at that moment. Chasing sides usually need wickets; defending sides in the middle overs usually need control.

Bowling average exists too — runs conceded per wicket — but in T20 it is the least used of the three, because it blends both jobs into one figure and obscures which one the bowler is actually good at.

Boundary and Dot-Ball Percentages

Two secondary numbers explain more T20 innings than the headline figures do. Boundary percentage is the share of deliveries a batter sends to the fence, and because boundaries make up so much of a T20 total it frequently accounts for most of a high strike rate on its own.

Dot-ball percentage is the mirror image: the share of deliveries that produce nothing. It is the most direct expression of pressure in the format. A batter with a respectable score and a high dot percentage has usually made life harder for the people who followed them.

Together they also reveal fragility. A batter whose runs come almost entirely in boundaries can be neutralised by a field and a length that removes their preferred shot — which is exactly the plan opposition analysts build against young attacking players.

Reading a Scorecard in Order

  1. Start with the match situation — target, overs remaining, wickets in hand. Numbers mean nothing without it.
  2. Read runs and balls faced together, never runs alone.
  3. Check where in the order the batter came in, and in which over.
  4. Look at boundaries hit; it tells you how the runs were made.
  5. For bowlers, read overs, maidens, runs and wickets as a set, plus the phase they bowled in.
  6. Check extras — a total distorted by wides tells a different story about the bowling side.

Five Ways These Numbers Mislead

  • Tiny samples. Six innings produce extreme figures routinely; they are noise, not signal.
  • Format mixing. A List A average quoted in a T20 argument is a different statistic entirely.
  • Ignoring conditions. The same 140 strike rate is a very different innings on a slow pitch.
  • Not-out inflation. Finishers' averages are structurally higher and are not comparable to an opener's.
  • Career figures for a current question. A ten-year average tells you little about this season.
